The surface of that \u201cnest\u201d began to crack. Slowly, with a dry crunch, like a shell breaking. Something dark and glossy appeared from inside. It didn\u2019t look like an insect. Nor like an animal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was\u2026 wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Its shape shifted before our eyes, as if it didn\u2019t follow any natural laws. It stretched, compressed, as if searching for a form that could exist in our world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And then \u2014 a sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Low. Deep. As if coming from somewhere far below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt can hear us\u2026\u201d Marina whispered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I didn\u2019t wait to find out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We rushed toward the stairs, stumbling, knocking over boxes. Behind us, something was breaking, falling apart. The creaking turned into a loud cracking noise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe need to call someone,\u201d Marina said, her voice shaking. \u201cThe police\u2026 or\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPeople lived here before. They heard things too. Saw\u2026 something in the attic. They left overnight. Didn\u2019t even take their belongings.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
