Something\u2026 on the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My body froze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At first, my mind refused to process what I was looking at.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lying among the damp soil and scattered leaves was a grotesque reddish mass \u2014 wet, swollen, strangely shiny. It looked unreal, almost obscene, as if something living had been ripped open and turned inside out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Instinctively, I stepped backward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My heart was hammering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhat\u2026 what the hell is that?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The thing looked soft, slimy\u2026 disturbingly organic. Flies buzzed around it. The smell coming from it was unbearable \u2014 rotten, warm, nauseating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For one terrifying second, my imagination spiraled completely out of control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A parasite?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some unknown creature?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The remains of an animal dragged into the yard during the night?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Or something even worse?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I couldn\u2019t stop staring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fear and disgust battled inside me. Every instinct screamed at me not to get closer\u2026 yet somehow, I couldn\u2019t walk away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With trembling hands, I pulled out my phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I snapped several photos from a distance, trying not to gag from the smell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then I rushed back inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The entire time, one horrifying thought kept pounding in my head:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
