There were at least thirty of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Behind them stood the landlord, Victor, with a cold expression of satisfaction on his face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2014 You have ten minutes, \u2014 he said sharply. \u2014 Take whatever you want to keep. The rest goes to the sidewalk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lisa burst into tears instantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Artem squeezed my hand so tightly I could feel his small nails digging into my skin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At that moment, I felt my entire world collapsing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The past few months had been a nightmare. After my husband\u2019s death, I found myself alone with two children and crushing debt. I cleaned offices at night, washed floors in shopping centers, and accepted every small job I could find simply to feed my children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He had an intimidating appearance: massive build, long gray beard, and a scar running through his eyebrow. On his leather vest were written the words: \u201cAndrei\u201d and underneath, \u201cClub President.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He stared at me for a long moment, then looked at my children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2014 Ma\u2019am, we were hired to clear out this apartment, \u2014 he said in a surprisingly calm voice. \u2014 Don\u2019t make things harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then, suddenly, something unexpected happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Artem ran toward him and wrapped his arms around his leg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My son looked up at the giant man, tears streaming down his face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2014 Please don\u2019t take our home! My mom does everything she can! She barely sleeps! She cries at night when she thinks we can\u2019t hear her!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A total silence filled the hallway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I covered my face, humiliated and broken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But Andrei didn\u2019t move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Slowly, he lowered his eyes toward my son\u2026 then looked behind me into the apartment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
