I already knew what was coming before the machine had even finished beeping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her breathing changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Panic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The total stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She froze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For several long seconds, she simply stared at the number as if it might magically shrink if she looked at it long enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then her lips trembled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOh no\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her voice was barely audible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She swallowed hard and looked up at me with eyes full of shame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cCould you remove the apples?\u201d she whispered. \u201cAnd\u2026 the cereal too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The little girl immediately lowered her eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The boy kept staring at the apples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That silence hurt more than tears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Children who are used to disappointment learn to stay quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d the woman said quickly, nearly choking on the words. \u201cI thought I had enough. I must have miscounted.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Behind her, impatient customers began shifting in line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One man sighed loudly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Another checked his watch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But all I could see was that little boy trying not to cry over a simple bag of apples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Something broke inside me at that moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Maybe because I had also been raised by a single mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Maybe because I recognized that look of shame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Or maybe because no child should ever look at fruit as though it were an unreachable luxury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Before she could protest further, I quietly pulled out my bank card and inserted it into the payment terminal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The woman blinked in confusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\u2019m taking care of it,\u201d I answered softly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her eyes widened immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNo, no\u2026 I can\u2019t accept that\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt\u2019s okay.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\u2019ll pay you back somehow,\u201d she whispered desperately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou don\u2019t have to.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The little boy looked at me as though I had handed him the entire world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The mother suddenly covered her mouth to stop herself from crying in front of everyone. Her shoulders shook violently for a moment before she pulled herself together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThank you,\u201d she mouthed silently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then she grabbed the bags, held her children close, and rushed toward the exit before the tears completely took over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And just like that, they were gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The next customer stepped forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The scanner started beeping again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Life moved on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Or at least, that\u2019s what I believed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
