For most of our childhood, people had trouble understanding that there were three of us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My sisters, Nora and Leila, and I were triplets. We shared the same birthday, the same bedroom for years, and so many childhood memories that even now I sometimes struggle to remember which of us actually did what.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nora was born first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Seven minutes before Leila and me, to be exact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She treated those seven minutes as if they gave her decades of seniority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Whenever we argued over who should choose a movie, who got the front seat, or who had to apologize first after a fight, Nora would straighten her shoulders and announce that she was the oldest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It never worked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But she never stopped trying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then, when we were eleven, everything changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nora became seriously ill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At first, our parents tried to protect us from the frightening parts. There were appointments, hospital visits, whispered conversations in the kitchen, and days when Nora was too exhausted to come to school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Leila and I understood more than the adults realized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We knew our sister was sick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We just couldn’t imagine a world in which she wouldn’t get better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Children can understand death in theory while still believing that the people they love are somehow exempt from it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nora died several months before our twelfth birthday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Afterward, our house became unbearably quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There were still two girls running down the stairs every morning. Two backpacks beside the door. Two voices arguing over the bathroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But everything seemed arranged around an invisible third person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her bed remained in our room for months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mom couldn’t bring herself to move it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Neither could we.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
People gradually started calling Leila and me twins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was easier for everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
New teachers didn’t have to hear the whole story. Neighbors who hadn’t known us as children didn’t need an explanation. Friends at university eventually assumed there had always been only two of us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But Leila and I never called ourselves twins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We weren’t two halves of something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We were what remained of three.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Over the years, grief changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It didn’t disappear. It simply stopped occupying every moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We finished school. We learned to drive. We had our first serious relationships. We went to university in different cities and discovered, for the first time, what it felt like not to be introduced as part of a set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And every birthday remained complicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There were candles for two people, but Mom always baked the same cake she’d made when there were three of us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Chocolate with strawberries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nora’s favorite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On our twenty-first birthday, Leila and I came home for the weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mom invited a few relatives for dinner, but she kept the celebration small. Dad cooked outside despite the cold, insisting that birthdays required grilled food because that had somehow become a family tradition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For several hours, everything felt almost ordinary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then Mom brought out the cake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She placed it in the middle of the dining table and disappeared into her bedroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When she returned, she was carrying a small wooden box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was old-fashioned, dark brown, and small enough to hold in both hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She placed it beside the cake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Leila looked at me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I looked at Mom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
«What is that?»<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mom didn’t answer immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Instead, she sat down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her hands were trembling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
«I’ve had this for ten years,» she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The room became silent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then she took an envelope from the top of the box and slid it across the table toward us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The moment I saw the handwriting, I knew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nora.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I hadn’t seen her handwriting in years, but recognition was immediate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She had always written capital letters too large and lowercase letters too small. Her words tilted upward toward the right side of the page as if they were climbing a hill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Across the front of the envelope she had written:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
«OPEN ON OUR 21ST BIRTHDAY.»<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Leila covered her mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For several seconds neither of us spoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mom explained that Nora had prepared the box during one of her final hospital stays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Apparently, she had asked Mom for help gathering a few things but had refused to let her see everything inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nora had made Mom promise not to give it to us early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not at sixteen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not at eighteen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not when we graduated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Twenty-one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That was the rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mom had kept her promise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For ten years, the box had remained hidden at the back of her closet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Leila began crying before we even opened the envelope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I couldn’t cry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I felt strangely numb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The idea that Nora had touched the paper in front of me was almost impossible to process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The last time she had held that envelope, we had all been eleven years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I finally opened it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Inside were several pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The letter wasn’t dramatic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That somehow made it harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nora wrote about ordinary things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She joked that if we were reading the letter, we were officially adults and therefore probably pretending to know what we were doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She predicted that Leila would become the organized one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She predicted that I would still lose my keys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Both predictions were accurate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then the letter became more serious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nora wrote that she knew we might feel guilty for growing older when she couldn’t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She didn’t use sophisticated words. She was eleven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But the meaning was unmistakable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She didn’t want us measuring our lives against the life she had lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She wanted us to travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To fall in love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To make mistakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To change our minds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To celebrate birthdays without feeling ashamed that she wasn’t there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then she wrote something that made Leila reach for my hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She said she didn’t want to become the saddest thing that had ever happened to us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She wanted to remain our sister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not our tragedy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We sat at the table crying openly by then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dad walked away for a moment because he couldn’t hold himself together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mom stared at the floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But there was still the box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We opened it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Inside were three small envelopes, several photographs and a collection of objects that would have meant nothing to anyone outside our family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There was a friendship bracelet made from faded thread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Three movie-ticket stubs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A tiny plastic horse Nora had carried everywhere when she was six.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A photograph of the three of us covered in mud after attempting to build what we had proudly called a «lake» in the backyard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There was also a notebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the first page Nora had written:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
«Things we have to do when we’re older.»<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was a childhood list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some entries were ridiculous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Eat cake for breakfast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Stay awake all night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Go somewhere without telling Mom exactly what we’re doing every five minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Other entries were surprisingly ambitious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
See the ocean from another country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Learn another language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Live alone at least once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Help someone without telling anybody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Take Mom somewhere beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the bottom of the final page was one more sentence:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
«You two have to finish the list.»<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For the first time that evening, Leila laughed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A real laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not because anything was particularly funny, but because the demand sounded exactly like Nora.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Even death hadn’t stopped our oldest sister from giving us instructions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There was one final item in the box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A disposable camera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dad recognized it immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nora had received it shortly before she became too sick to leave the hospital regularly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nobody remembered what photographs were on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The film had never been developed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A few days later, Leila and I found a photography shop that could still process it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We expected hospital rooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Instead, most of the pictures were terrible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One showed half of Dad’s face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Another was almost entirely Nora’s thumb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There were blurry photographs of nurses, a window, Mom sleeping in a chair and a television showing some program none of us recognized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then we reached the final photograph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It showed Leila and me asleep beside Nora.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Someone must have helped her take it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The three of us were squeezed together under one hospital blanket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nora was awake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She was looking directly into the camera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And she was smiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That photograph now sits in my apartment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For years, I thought remembering Nora meant holding tightly to the day we lost her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I remembered the hospital corridors, the funeral, the empty bed and the terrible first birthday with only two sets of candles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The box changed that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It reminded us that Nora’s life contained far more than its ending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She had been mischievous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bossy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Funny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Competitive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Occasionally unbearable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She hated tomatoes, loved thunderstorms, cheated shamelessly at board games and insisted that seven minutes made her the unquestioned authority among us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Those were the things grief had gradually pushed behind the memory of her death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The box brought them back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Over the following years, Leila and I began completing Nora’s list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We ate cake for breakfast first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That was easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We traveled together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We took Mom to a coastal town she had always wanted to visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Leila learned Italian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I finally lived alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some tasks took years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Others turned out to be impossible to interpret because they had clearly been written by an eleven-year-old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We kept them anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There is still one item we haven’t crossed out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
«Do something important together.»<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When we were younger, we assumed «important» meant something enormous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Now I’m not sure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Perhaps importance isn’t measured by how impressive something looks from the outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sometimes it means calling your sister when she is having a terrible day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sometimes it means sitting with your mother while she talks about a daughter she still misses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sometimes it means refusing to let a person you loved become nothing more than the story of how they died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Our twenty-first birthday was supposed to mark adulthood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Instead, it gave us something much older and more valuable: permission to continue living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nora never got to become twenty-one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We cannot change that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We cannot give her the years she should have had.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But we can carry her into ours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For a long time, when strangers asked whether Leila and I were twins, I didn’t know what to say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
