We shouldn’t romanticize that reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But kindness still matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A frightened elderly woman was able to leave a supermarket with her groceries and her dignity intact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A frightened little boy was stopped before he reached a dangerous road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Neither event needed to be part of some cosmic bargain to have meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Margaret didn’t vanish from our lives after that afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Once we discovered how close she lived, it became natural to greet each other when we crossed paths. Sometimes we talked for a few minutes. Noah remembered her as the woman who caught him when he chased his ball.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most will pass through our lives briefly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some won’t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That doesn’t mean we should help people because we expect a reward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It means the opposite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Help when you reasonably can because, at that particular moment, you have the ability to make someone’s difficult day slightly easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That is enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I thought I was simply paying a grocery bill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Two days later, standing in my driveway with my son trembling in my arms, I understood that the most important part of what happened had never been the money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was the decision, made by two people on different days, not to look away when someone else needed help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
