Flowers leaned toward the sunlight, insects moved lazily between the plants, and nothing seemed unusual. But as I walked toward one of the flower beds, an unpleasant odor suddenly stopped me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was strong, foul and completely out of place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At first, I assumed that something had died nearby. Perhaps a mouse or another small animal had become trapped beneath the plants. From a distance, it looked almost like a piece of raw meat. When I moved closer, however, its appearance became even stranger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several bright red structures stretched outward from a central point. They were thick, irregular and covered with dark patches. The entire thing looked so unusual that for a moment it was difficult to decide whether I was looking at a plant, an animal or something else entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then came the most unsettling impression: it seemed to be moving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Creature\u2014or Something Else?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My first instinct was to keep my distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gardens are full of small animals that can appear strange when seen unexpectedly. Caterpillars, slugs and unfamiliar insects can easily surprise someone who has never encountered them before. But this looked different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The red structures resembled tentacles or fingers emerging from the ground. Combined with the terrible smell, they gave the object an almost alien appearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I watched for a while.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually, it became clear that the apparent movement was not the movement of an animal crawling across the ground. Parts of the strange object were changing position extremely slowly, almost as though they were unfolding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That observation changed everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of asking what kind of creature I had found, I began wondering whether it might actually be a fungus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A photograph and some careful searching eventually provided a likely explanation. The bizarre garden visitor closely resembled a group of fungi commonly known as stinkhorns. One particularly striking species is <em>Clathrus archeri<\/em>, often called the octopus stinkhorn or devil&#8217;s fingers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And its appearance is every bit as unusual as those names suggest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Fungus That Looks Like It Has Tentacles<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Clathrus archeri<\/em> belongs to the stinkhorn family, a group of fungi famous for their unusual shapes and powerful odors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When young, the fungus does not initially resemble a red star or an octopus. It develops inside a pale, egg-like structure in or near the soil. As it matures, the outer covering splits open and several elongated arms emerge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These arms gradually spread apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their intense red coloration can make them resemble tentacles, fingers or pieces of exposed flesh. Dark material may appear on parts of the surface, adding to the disturbing effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For someone encountering one unexpectedly, the resemblance to an animal can be remarkably convincing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The apparent &#171;movement&#187; has a simple biological explanation. A fungus emerging and expanding can change shape over time. If someone happens to discover it during this stage, the slow unfolding may create the impression that the object itself is alive in the way an animal is alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is alive, of course, but it is not a crawling creature waiting beneath the flowers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The smell provides another clue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Would a Fungus Smell So Bad?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Flowers often use pleasant fragrances to attract pollinating insects. Some fungi employ almost the opposite strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many stinkhorn fungi produce an odor reminiscent of decaying organic material. To humans, it can be extremely unpleasant. To certain insects, however, that smell is an invitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Flies and other insects that normally investigate rotting material are attracted to the fungus. When they land on its spore-bearing surface, spores can stick to their bodies. The insects then move elsewhere, helping disperse those spores into the surrounding environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is an ingenious reproductive strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of relying primarily on wind to carry spores away, the fungus effectively recruits insects as transportation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That also explains why the combination of appearance and smell can seem so disturbing to people. The fungus is using characteristics associated with decomposition because those characteristics are useful for attracting the insects it needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What appears grotesque from a human perspective can therefore be highly effective from an evolutionary one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An Unexpected Journey Around the World<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The octopus stinkhorn is generally regarded as native to regions including Australia and New Zealand, but it has also been recorded far beyond its original range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over time, it became established in parts of Europe and elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The exact pathway by which any introduced species spreads can sometimes be difficult to reconstruct with certainty. Soil, plants, agricultural materials and other transported goods can potentially move fungal spores over considerable distances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once appropriate environmental conditions are available, a fungus may establish itself in a new region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That means encountering an unfamiliar fungus in a garden does not necessarily indicate that something extraordinary has suddenly appeared. Fungal organisms can remain unnoticed for long periods because the largest part of many fungi is hidden from view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What we casually call a &#171;mushroom&#187; is usually only the visible reproductive structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Below the surface, a network of microscopic threads called mycelium may extend through soil, decaying wood or other organic matter. The dramatic structure that suddenly appears above ground can therefore be just a temporary sign of a much larger organism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Should You Remove It?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finding something that resembles red tentacles emerging from a flower bed naturally raises another question: is it dangerous?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A strange appearance alone is not evidence that something is harmful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stinkhorn fungi generally participate in decomposition, helping break down organic material. In that sense, they are part of the recycling system operating continuously in healthy soils and ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, identification matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are many species of fungi, and photographs or casual visual comparisons should never be treated as sufficient evidence that an unknown fungus is safe to eat or handle extensively. Anyone who cannot confidently identify a specimen should avoid consuming it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a stinkhorn appears in a garden, the greatest practical problem may simply be its smell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Removing the visible fruiting body can temporarily eliminate the odor, but the underlying fungal network may remain in the soil or organic material. Changing excessively damp conditions or removing decomposing material may sometimes make the location less favorable, although fungi are natural inhabitants of gardens and complete elimination is not always realistic or necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Children and pets should also be discouraged from eating unidentified mushrooms or fungi found outdoors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Strange Fungi Frighten Us<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is another reason discoveries like this spread rapidly online: our brains are constantly trying to classify what we see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A red structure with several long arms immediately suggests familiar categories. Tentacles suggest an octopus. Finger-like projections suggest a hand. A dark, wet surface may resemble flesh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When none of those interpretations fits perfectly, uncertainty takes over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That uncertainty can make an ordinary biological phenomenon seem frightening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nature contains countless organisms that do not fit our everyday expectations. Some fungi resemble coral. Others look like tiny cups, stars, brains or pieces of jelly. Certain plants imitate insects, while some insects resemble leaves, bark or twigs so effectively that they disappear against their surroundings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The unfamiliar is not necessarily unnatural.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Often, it simply reveals how limited our everyday experience of biodiversity really is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Garden Is More Complicated Than It Looks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The strangest part of the discovery was not ultimately the fungus itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was realizing how much activity can take place in a small patch of ground without attracting our attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beneath flowers and grass exists an enormous biological community. Fungi interact with plants, bacteria, insects and decaying organic material. Some species form important relationships with plant roots. Others specialize in breaking down dead matter and returning nutrients to the ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of that activity remains invisible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then, occasionally, environmental conditions are right and something extraordinary emerges from the soil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It may last only a short time before collapsing and disappearing again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That fleeting appearance can make the discovery seem even more mysterious. One day there is nothing unusual beside the flowers. The next day, a bright red structure that looks like a creature from another world has appeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet no monster has invaded the garden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What seemed at first like a horrifying animal was most likely an example of one of nature&#8217;s stranger reproductive strategies: a fungus shaped to attract attention, producing an odor designed not for humans but for insects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The experience was a reminder that when something unfamiliar appears in nature, fear is often only the first reaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Curiosity can reveal a much more interesting story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"It began with a smell.
