But on his birthday, the silence felt different. It seemed heavier, as though the rooms themselves understood what day it was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Arthur woke shortly after seven and remained in bed for several minutes, staring at the ceiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNinety-seven,\u201d he said quietly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There was nobody there to answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Years earlier, birthdays had meant noise. His wife would wake before him and pretend she had forgotten the date. Then breakfast would arrive with a candle pushed into whatever she had made. He wanted to say that he missed his son. That he was sorry for some of the things he had said. That he did not want their final memory of each other to be an argument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Instead, he pressed send.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The message was delivered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
No reply came.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Arthur placed the phone face down and lit the candle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He did not make a wish. At his age, he thought, wishes should probably be used carefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He simply watched the flame for a moment and blew it out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then the phone rang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Arthur froze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For several seconds, he was afraid to turn it over. His heart began beating faster, and he felt foolish for allowing himself to hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Finally, he looked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Daniel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Arthur’s hand trembled as he answered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There was silence on the other end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arthur looked at the little cake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI didn’t know if you still had this number,\u201d Daniel continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI kept it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Neither man seemed to know what to say next. Years of anger could not be explained in a few sentences. There were apologies to make, questions to answer, and old wounds that would not disappear simply because a telephone had rung.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But Arthur no longer needed everything to be repaired immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The call itself was enough to begin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI should have called sooner,\u201d Daniel finally said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Arthur swallowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They talked cautiously at first. Daniel asked about Arthur’s health and where he was living. Arthur asked about Daniel’s work and family. With every question, the distance between them seemed slightly less permanent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Eventually Daniel asked, \u201cAre you alone?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Arthur glanced around the quiet kitchen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arthur had spent the morning believing his ninety-seventh birthday would be remembered for loneliness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Instead, it became the day he finally stopped waiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
