In the months that followed, one person remained unusually close to her: Peter\u2019s oldest friend, Daniel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Daniel never tried to replace the man Claire had lost. He did not tell her that she needed to move on, and he never treated her loneliness as an opportunity. He simply appeared when something needed doing. If a pipe leaked, he repaired it. If the garden became neglected, he helped clear it. When Claire stopped answering messages, he would sometimes leave groceries at her door without insisting on coming inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

If anything ever happened to him, Peter had said, Daniel should make sure Claire eventually received the letter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But there had been one unusual condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Daniel was not supposed to give it to her while her grief was still raw. Peter feared that words written for an uncertain future might become another burden rather than a comfort. Daniel had therefore waited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When his friendship with Claire eventually developed into love, the existence of the letter became even more complicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Daniel could have revealed it earlier. Instead, he decided that Claire should know about it before their new marriage truly began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She broke the seal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There was no instruction for Claire to marry him. Nothing in the letter suggested Peter had foreseen their relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But the final pages contained something Claire had desperately needed to hear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Peter did not want his death to become the end of her life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He wanted her to love again if love found her. He wanted her to travel, make mistakes, change plans and build a future he would never see. Remembering him, he wrote, should never require refusing happiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Claire lowered the letter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Daniel was sitting across the room, waiting silently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The following morning, Claire placed the letter back in the safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
